The book is divided in three parts and follows basically how I have structured and taught the Jazz Basics course at Hochschule Osnabrück in Germany. Part 1 deals with the problem of “consensus” in jazz, part 2 with the most important historic jazz styles and approaches, how to recognize them and how to perform them, while Part 3 is dedicated to jazz improvisation and goes deeper into how jazz musicians improvise in different jazz contexts.
